Camosun’s Little Gem
7 km Saanich
Looking for a short run that ticks a lot of boxes (scenic and pastoral, quiet roads, gently rolling terrain, rural yet not too far from downtown, some nice trail mixed in…)? This 7 km loop by Camosun College Interurban may be just the ticket. One of the great things about this route is how easy it is to lengthen if you’re feeling like running further: for example, you can continue along Prospect Lake Rd. (either direction) to make a larger loop, or you can include the trail network behind Camosun College.
Mighty Mt. Work Meets Itchy Snake
7 km Highlands
Short and sweet… This awesome route starts with a challenging trail run up and over Mt. Work, followed by a roller coaster road run. The steep, technical trail up Mt. Work is richly rewarded with incredible views from the summit. After careening down the other side of the mountain, dodging arbutus trees, Ross-Durrance Rd. is like a snake with a delightfully bad itch… narrow, winding with fortunately light traffic, this road makes for an awesome run back to the start!
The Amazing Lagoon & Castle Loop
9.5 km Colwood
This is the gem of Colwood… You get to run along the incredible Esquimalt Lagoon, with it’s plethora of birdlife and expansive ocean vistas, and also view the historic and regal Hatley Castle, all in less than 10 km! This route includes a great mix of fantastic road running and easily runnable footpaths. If you want to extend your run further, consider exploring the Royal Roads University trail network.
Henderson Huff-n-Puff
14 km Saanich-Oak Bay
Henderson Park is one of our favourite small parks to run in. Winding around and through a picturesque 9-hole golf course, the 1.15 km loop chip trail makes a great route to run as laps, or to add to. The route we describe here begins at Henderson Park and continues east through the high-end residential area of Uplands to the beautiful and natural Uplands Park. Here, we enjoy exploring a few delightful trails before making our way back to the start by way of Mystic Vale and some of the choicest UVIC footpaths.
The Lakes via Old West and Linnet Lane
14 km Saanich
This is a great variation of the traditional and well used Elk-Beaver Lakes trail loop. If you’re looking for something a little different, yet still including an awesome trail run around “The Lakes”, this may be a great route for you. Combining Linnet Lane and Old West Saanich roads to the usual lakes loop provides some delightful roller coaster running along very pretty country roads.
Victoria’s Best Views
33 km Victoria, Saanich and Oak Bay
This route is all about getting to the highest points with the best views in the city. At 33 km, it makes for a great marathon training run! Enjoy capturing some spectacular views from Beacon Hill, Gonzales Hill, Walbran Park, Anderson Hill, Willows Beach, Cattle Point, Mt. Tolmie, Mt. Doug, Camrose Park, Peacock Hill and Summit Park.
